Sanju Samson's candid take on criticism after match-winning innings

Sanju Samson has been in the spotlight long enough to recognize that criticism is a constant companion in international cricket, albeit one that morphs over time. After a dazzling performance where he scored 57 runs off just 22 balls, leading India to a seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the second T20I in New Delhi, he finally addressed the weight of expectation that comes with his role.

Having faced five consecutive failures prior to this match, and with a young competitor, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, nipping at his heels for the opening slot, the pressure was palpable. The social media commentary dissecting his every move had reached a crescendo, making it difficult for him to ignore the questions surrounding his place in the team.

Yet, Samson chose to let his bat do the talking. His innings was a masterclass in aggression, with 52 of his 57 runs coming in boundaries. This performance not only showcased his talent but also indicated a mental clarity that had perhaps eluded him in previous outings.

The competition for selection has been fierce, especially with Sooryavanshi's impressive showing during India's tour of Zimbabwe while Samson was sidelined. Although this innings may not have completely settled the selection debate, it certainly shifted the narrative in his favor.

After the match, Samson shared insights into how he copes with the relentless stream of opinions that accompany his performances. "I try to switch the Wi-Fi off," he remarked, humorously alluding to the constant connectivity of social media. However, he acknowledged that sometimes the 'Wi-Fi' gets turned back on, exposing him to the critiques of senior players and the public.

Samson addresses mental challenges of criticism

He candidly admitted that the outside noise does affect players, particularly in India, where expectations are sky-high. "You need to be very clear about what your mindset is, how you need to prepare and what mindset you need to play with," he stated, emphasizing the importance of mental resilience.

Samson's frankness about the impact of criticism is refreshing in a sport where players often feel pressured to project an image of invulnerability. He articulated a crucial point: acknowledging vulnerability is not a weakness but rather a sign of emotional intelligence. "I'm not a machine. We are not robots that can say, 'No, it doesn't affect me.' Definitely, it affects you," he explained, shedding light on the psychological challenges athletes face.

He further elaborated that if he were to dwell on every negative comment before stepping onto the field, it would hinder his performance. Instead, he adopts a mindset of resilience, telling himself, "Koi baat nahi," which translates to "No worries," allowing him to focus on his game without the burden of external judgment.

Samson's metaphor about managing the 'Wi-Fi problem' resonates well in today's digital age, where athletes are bombarded with information and opinions. His approach serves as a valuable lesson for younger players: it’s not about being impervious to criticism but about recognizing it, managing it, and still performing at a high level. This emotional agility is what truly sets successful athletes apart in the competitive arena of cricket.
