Florida State Basketball Aims for ACC Contention with New Roster

Florida State men’s basketball head coach Luke Loucks is set to lead a restructured team into the new season, featuring a roster of 13 newcomers. The Seminoles have shown flashes of potential during exhibition play, and they will face their first real test on November 2 against Florida A&M University at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.

In his second year at the helm, Loucks is drawing on his own experience as an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion during his playing days at FSU. The previous season ended in disappointment with a narrow one-point loss to Duke University in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Now, the Garnet and Gold are determined to build on last season’s momentum and re-establish themselves as contenders in the conference.

“I think the conference is better when Florida State is one of those top tier teams. I didn't come to Florida State to be average and to be okay with being okay,” Loucks stated during the 2026 ACC Tipoff press conference on October 7. “We came here to win and we are all in on getting Florida State back to being a top tier winning program, not just in the conference, but nationally.”

Loucks’ vision for success begins with recruiting, where he has made significant efforts to build personal connections with potential players. His commitment was evident when he traveled to Slovakia to meet with junior forward Sebastian Rancik’s family, highlighting the importance of establishing relationships with recruits firsthand.

“I think we were dead last in the ACC and dead last in power five basketball last season,” Loucks reflected. “We were fortunate enough to fight and still finish tied for seventh in the ACC, but our resources went up and that's why we were able to go get guys like senior guard Anthony Robinson II and Sebastian Rancik.”

Despite the influx of newcomers, Loucks has set high standards and expectations for the team. For Rancik, that standard begins even before the first practice. “We have a thing that we say before every practice and after every break: ‘all in.’ We have to make sure that we put the team first in everything that we do, compete in every possession on both sides of the floor, and be good teammates,” he remarked at the ACC Tipoff press conference.

Team chemistry is vital for success

Building team chemistry will be crucial for the Seminoles this season, especially with six freshmen and seven transfers joining the squad. Robinson emphasized the importance of connection, stating, “We have a lot of leaders on this team. We connected from day one, and we have a lot of good guys in the group. Being able to gel from day one and really feel connected is a big key, and I believe the most connected team wins.”

Fifth-year center Alex Steen is also looking to make an impact this season. Recently, Leon County Circuit Judge David Frank granted Steen an injunction in his legal battle against the NCAA, allowing him to play a fifth season of college basketball. As FSU integrates its newcomers, Steen’s experience could prove invaluable as the team aims to take the next step in the ACC.

“You guys know Alex from last year, but what you don't see behind the scenes is the impact he has on our team in our locker room as a leader,” Loucks noted in a press conference on October 22. “Just being about the right things, he will immediately be in the rotation we're planning on playing him.”

Seminoles prepare for key matchup against Gators

The Seminoles will face one of their first major challenges on November 10 when they host the No. 1 University of Florida at the Donald L. Tucker Center. After narrowly losing to the Gators last season, the Seminoles are eager to defend their home court and end a five-game losing streak against their in-state rivals.

With a renewed sense of direction under Loucks, bolstered by added depth and talent, the Garnet and Gold are poised to turn their potential into results as the regular season tips off on Monday.
