India's Para Track Stars Shine Bright at Asian Para Games

India's para-athletes have made a significant impact at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, amassing an impressive collection of gold medals. On Thursday, Shailesh Kumar led the charge with a stunning podium sweep in the men's high jump T63, achieving a Games-record leap of 1.89 meters. His performance not only secured him the gold but also highlighted the depth of talent within the Indian contingent, as former Paralympic bronze medallist Varun Bhati claimed silver with a season-best jump of 1.84 meters, and Rahul rounded out the podium with a jump of 1.81 meters.

In the women's 400m T47, Anjanaben Bumbadiya showcased her speed and determination, clocking in at 59.97 seconds to clinch the gold medal. Her compatriot Jayanti Behera finished strong, taking silver with a time of 1:00.65, while Thailand's Sasirawan Inthachot secured the bronze in 1:02.58. This event further exemplifies the competitive spirit and skill of Indian athletes on the international stage.

Dilip Mahadu Gavit also made headlines by securing his second gold medal of the Games, having previously won the men's 100m T47 gold on Wednesday. He added to his accolades by winning the 400m in a time of 48.27 seconds. Initially, Bhavikkumar Bharwad finished second in 49.31 seconds but was disqualified for a lane infringement, allowing Japan's Kakeru Ishida to be upgraded to silver and Uzbekistan's Marufjon Murodulloev to take bronze.

Dharmaraj Solairaj sets a new standard

Defending champion Dharmaraj Solairaj made waves by smashing the Asian record in the men's T44/T62/T64 long jump, registering an impressive jump of 7.15 meters on his second attempt. This performance not only earned him gold but also solidified his status as a leading figure in para-athletics. Malaysia's Eddy Bernard and Japan's Yuma Tamaki took silver and bronze, respectively, with jumps of 6.34 meters and 6.89 meters.

India's para-athletes dominate the medal tally

Suvarna Raj continued the trend of excellence by clinching gold in the women's F54 discus throw with a winning throw of 15.66 meters. Iran’s Shahla Hadidi and Vietnam’s Thi Ngoc Thuy Nguyen followed closely, taking silver and bronze with throws of 15.45 meters and 14.65 meters, respectively.

India's para-athletes have not only excelled in individual events but have also showcased their collective strength, with a total of 52 medals won so far in para-athletics, including 18 gold, 16 silver, and 18 bronze medals by the end of Day 4 of the competitions. This impressive tally underscores the growing prominence of para-athletics in India and the dedication of its athletes to achieving excellence on the world stage.
