Clint Hurdle and Rockies Part Ways After Five Seasons

Clint Hurdle is officially parting ways with the Colorado Rockies, a decision he shared via social media. The 69-year-old baseball lifer has been with the organization for the past five seasons, primarily in a special assistant role. Hurdle's history with the Rockies is rich, having played parts of ten seasons in the big leagues before transitioning into coaching and management.

Hurdle's first significant impact came when he was promoted to manager in 2002, leading the Rockies for eight seasons and guiding them to the World Series in 2007. However, after a rough start to the 2009 season, he was let go. Following a brief stint as a hitting coach with the Texas Rangers, Hurdle took the helm of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011. Under his leadership, the Pirates made three consecutive playoff appearances from 2013 to 2015, a feat that remains the franchise's only postseason berths since the Barry Bonds era. Hurdle earned NL Manager of the Year honors in 2013 but was dismissed at the end of the 2019 season.

After a couple of years away from the game, Hurdle returned to the Rockies in a special assistant capacity. He briefly stepped back onto the coaching staff in 2025, taking on interim roles as hitting coach and bench coach during a tumultuous season that saw the Rockies finish with a staggering 119 losses. This past season, he returned to the special assistant role under the new front office led by Paul DePodesta and Josh Byrnes.

Hurdle reflects on his journey with the Rockies

In his farewell message, Hurdle emphasized that he is not retiring but rather "recalculating" his journey both personally and professionally. He expressed gratitude towards the Rockies organization for the opportunities provided over the years. Hurdle is known for his extensive experience and deep understanding of the game, which has led to speculation about his future in baseball.

Speculation grows on Hurdle's next move in MLB

Many fans and analysts are already discussing potential roles for Hurdle moving forward. Some believe he could be a strong candidate for a managerial position, with teams like the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and New York Mets potentially in need of new leadership. Hurdle's blend of experience and insight could be invaluable to a franchise looking to rebuild or reestablish itself in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.

As the Rockies look to the future, Hurdle's departure marks the end of an era. His legacy within the organization is significant, and while the team faces challenges ahead, Hurdle's influence on the players and coaching staff will not be easily forgotten. The Rockies must now navigate the next steps in their organizational overhaul, aiming for a clearer vision of success as they move forward without one of their most recognizable figures.
